Drury R. Reavill Pathology Database

Epidemiology of Diseases in Exotic Animals

Patterns mined from 84,190 pathology records — 36,258 with a classified disease process and 45,946 with a usable age. Counts based on diagnosis-text keywords are estimates, not audited case series.

What brings each class to the pathologist

Share of classified diagnoses by disease process. Tumors dominate the mammal caseload (41.5% of classified diagnoses) but are far less frequent in reptiles and amphibians, where infectious and inflammatory disease lead.

Tumor risk climbs steeply with age

Among diagnoses with a classified process and a usable age, the tumor share rises from under 4% in animals below one year to roughly half of diagnoses in older mammals. Points are omitted where fewer than 40 records fall in a bin.

Signature species–disease associations

Conditions strongly over-represented in one species relative to the rest of its class (bar length on a log scale; minimum 10 cases). The screen recovers classic associations — budgerigar pituitary tumors, boa inclusion body disease — alongside less-reported signals such as leopard gecko xanthomatosis.
